this may seem random but i have been wondering about this question lately.
i am a full supporter of gay/lesbian rights and, if i was old enough at the time, would have voted no on prop 8 in california. i know a gay couple and they are just as kind and nice and cool as anyother people, if not more so. the only thing is that i have always used the word "faggot" when joking with my friends or using as an insult but i never really thought much about it until i accidentaly used it around a gay person. im not gay so i wouldnt know how this word could affect a homosexual person, just like how i wouldnt know how the word "nigger" would personally affect a black person because im not black. the person didnt take offense but i still feel bad for saying it. just thought i would ask everyone's oppinions.
lol yeah
If a word is being bad just stick it in the corner for a time out.
Its offensive to some people
It depends on how you use it.
If you're bullying and putting someone down and using faggot to be derogatory then yes, of course, it's being used to offend and is therefore bad.
Otherwise, I think people need to lighten up. If you're not intending harm, faggot is just like any other word with more than one meaning that changes in the context it's being used. So essentially, I completely contradict and disagree with what I said before. :')
It's just a word. If you stop taking it seriously you take its power away. Quit being such faggots about it.
Depends on the context.
It is considered one
*cruel
Yes, its an awful term. Whether you support LGBTQ rights or not, faggot is never acceptable.
It's a derogatory term, generally people don't use it unless they are intending to offend the person they are insulting with it. So yeah, it's not a very nice word.
If the person tells you it's okay to call them a faggot, then it is. Some gay people are proud to be called it. But most people find it a nasty thing to call a gay person even if you don't mean it in a curel way.
I think 'faggot' is quite a bad word. Worse than 'puff', in my opinion. But I think it all depends on the person who says it, and the person they say it to. If it's between comfortable friends, I don't see the problem because it isn't meant in a nasty way. But if it's said between 2 people in an argument it's not very nice.
It's like anything.. it all depends on what context you use it in. :)
Well, I find it an insult to say that word, so I don't really use it...
its extremley offensive to homosexuals. I refrain from saying it so i dont offend anyone
Tanks Bobby, I hope my questions do not have bothered. By the way, my native language is not English, is Castilian, so I sometimes have trouble understanding some words.. like 'callous' :)
@OptimisticPessimist: Intentionaly Spiteful ?
I don't think so. :)
Dont worry, I know a gay couple too and I say 'OMG thats so gay' by accident infront of them. I feel so bad after saying it.
And at my school faggot is a bad word, but I say it anyway (;
doesnt a faggot mean meantaball? >.<
@Nateee : intentionaly spiteful.
in response to Nateee:
well first off, i accidentally spelled the word "callous" wrong (oops). its supposed to be two L's, not just one. but anyways, it means insensitive or indifferent. so calling someone callous would be saying that they are uncaring about other people's feelings. therefore, "faggot" is a callous word.
i hope this helped
By the way...What does it mean 'calous' ?
We just have to accept people as it is. :)
And do not judge them for that. Even a word can be hurtful.
yeah i get what you're saying and thats how pretty much how i feel about it now, i still try and lower my usage of it though cause it is a pretty calous word
Sorry about my bad English :P
I think if you use among your friends, no problem, because it is a joke, and among you.
But say it to someone with other sexual orientation becomes a bit inappropriate.
Although what you said with no other intentions, we should put ourselves in the place of another person, and may find it hurtful or laugh at that, which by the way, there's nothing wrong with that.
Do you understand my point?
