So i was on twitter the other day and a band i follow had to explain someone the difference between an LP and a EP...so I figured there might be other questions people might have so if you are curious about anything just let me know and I'll answer your question
@Martin NOO!!! F^M3 iz d^ 0NlY +inG dAt wiLL M^k3 M3h HAPPI!
@Ana I do indeed know the answer... but I thought it was a discussion so I was posting it back as a discussion item.
It's a fun trivia thing to look up, if you like. Or I can post back the answer later this weekend if someone else doesn't chime in. A hint is that there were competing formats for music in the early days, and they maps to the speeds of 78 RPM (the first), 45 RPM and 33 1/3 RPM. The 33 1/3 format and size was actually championed by one company and you had to buy a special turntable to play their records(!)
On the CD length question, Akio Morita, the Chairman of Sony, always claimed he demanded that length because it could contain all of Beethoven's 9th Symphony on one disc. Here is a reference on that one: http://tafkac.org/misc/cd/cd_length_skeptical.html (There are varying stories about how the length was chosen, but in a 60 Minutes profile Morita confirmed the Beethoven story.)
Bonus star for anyone who knows what Sony's very first product was (a very successful one, but probably not what you think).
@Rachel The quest for fame will devour you. Seek tranquility, pursue the simple life, just like Josh F. :-)
Anytime.
Sandy, you're a genius! These are the kind of answers I need!
Make a song titled "Saturday" with a shitton of autotune, post on tumblr, and wait.
That's not fame, though. You're on TV but that doesn't make you famous. And I kinda want to be famous, like, right now.
@Rachel Fabuleux when your 18 sign up for big brother or something it's a reality TV show. It's like a social game if the people in the house don't like you they vote you out but if you win the game of the week you are safe but have to decided who to vote out. It's the preps "survivor"
Dammit I don't care! Just make me famous!!!
@tragicaly_hip Basically EP is a CD with around six songs on it an LP is a CD with around 12
@MartinHaradee how come i have a feeling you know the answer already lol. Really I'm a junior but my hs offers college level course in marketing I'm in the second level on that i haven't come into anything about LP being a marketing term. so i personally don't know the answer to that but I'm sure google could help you out
@Rachel Fabuleux i guess it really depends what you want to be famous for. world record? youtube star? pop star? reality tv star? the list goes on and on
@Ana OK, here is another one: What is the origin of the term LP, and why was it originally kind of a marketing term?
@Rachel All the EP lore is indeed true. I am sure our Canadian colleague could add more. It's an interesting evolution of a term that goes back many decades and multiple recording formats.
That's not to say to the original point of this topic that it isn't still a somewhat mystifying term to people.. I mean, it kind of doesn't make any sense as a term nowadays; it's just a holdover from decades ago.
:-)
VVV dissed :)
Hi @Ana. Originally, E.P. stood for "Extended Play 45" which was either multi-song record, or, occasionally, a long single format pressed in vinyl. 45 RPM vinyl recordings were louder (since the turntable moved faster and generated more volume for the stylus and pickup), so EPs also became very popular in the 1970s disco era as a format that could produce long danceable songs.
A reasonably accurate history of the term is at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_play
Recording historian Barry Hansen (you may know him as radio/music host "Dr Demento") has written extensively over the years about different recording lengths and formats, but unfortunately most of his articles are not available on the Internet and thus are lost to the general populace now. I believe he wrote an article about the history of EPs, but I can't find it via Google.
@Sandy You're not my friend anymore. I'll go be Paris Hilton's bff and get famous that way
@Rachel
So you'll be the first to go.
People get famous for being murdered, too. Just watch the I.D. Channel.
People get famous for murdering people...
I always thought
EP meant extended playing and LP was long playing.
@Ana No they don't. Some people are famous for being poor.
Must I do all the work when it comes to this? I asked a simple question.
@Rachel Fabuleux they go hand in hand same thing want help or what?
@MartinHardee ..weird i just put this as my status idk what it "originally" meant but now it stand for Extended Product now basically what that means is less songs. EP's are cheaper-er to make not cheap tho by any means lots of the times bands will do EP's when they don't have time to do a full record (LP) but still have a few songs they want to release or they simply don't have the funding to make a LP. So format? I guess short n' sweet it's just less songs really LP's are REALLY expensive so an EP is just piece of an LP
Do you know what EP originally meant, as far as recording formats?
WHAT? How dare you? I do NOT want to be rich, you silly girl! I want to be FAMOUS (and rich). FAMOUS!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87klvkCCTNc
@Rachel_Fabuleux you want a get rich quick scheme huh? Well I can help you..but your gonna need more technology talent than you would pure talent. If Justin Beieber can do it you can.
@MartinHardee that's a good question. I don't really think there is one answer. I would assume that's the standard due to things like expenses, and honestly attention span has gone down back in the day you could have a song that was five to eight minutes long and people would listen to the whole thing now people want it short sweet and repetitive
@tragically_hip I'm not sure of the exact number for Canada my guess would be a couple hundred thousand but i am 90% sure that it does include digital downloads but it would more be the digital download of the full album it wouldn't count if someone bought only one song off the album that wouldn't count as a mark toward album sales. Really the only difference between digital downloads (the ones you pay for) and the actual physical CD is the percentage that goes back to the band. So if you really want to see a band go on more tours and make more music you should buy the physical CD
How many units have to be sold for an album to go platinum in Canada, and does this include digital downloads or just the cd sales?
You understand me. Let's be friends.
@Sandy You're unbelievable, Ah, so unbelievable. You ruin everything! Oh, you better go home!
Just leave the party with me
And never go home
@Sandy Fame is so important to me, but sometimes I don't know how to do it.
This core is critical, but faith is unavailable. My life must become incredible, now, please understand that!
Do you know why the standard length of a CD is limited 74 minutes?
Fame is now injectable indeed, Rachel.
Process the progress.
How do I become famous? And please, no craptastic answers like "Go on youtube!" or something. I need someone right here, right now to make me famous.
I'm not very talented, but I hear fame is pretty injectable now and days. Could I get a shot for that?
