Did anybody else read one of the internet articles i.e digitalspy.com about comments made in SPIN magazine.
"Hayley Williams has said that her band Paramore's fanbase has changed in recent months.
The singer admitted that she tries hard not to be biased against older fans but is often concerned about their intentions.
"I don't want to be like, 'This guy doesn't like our music, he's just a creep'. I try not to be judgmental," she told Spin.
"On one hand, it's flattering, like wow, sexy doesn't have to be a tan blonde girl showing off her goodies. Then again, how far are people taking it? I know there's pictures online that people have done s**t to that'd probably make my cry."
Williams thanked fans for their support earlier this month after a topless photo of her leaked on her Twitter page.
I felt old the moment i turned 22 ;) I started listening to paramore when i was 15/16 so i had the pleasure to have grown up with their music. But i dont think age matters when youve been listening to a band for 5 or 6 years, its about the music and what it means to you thats important.
OMG, it's amazing to hear some of you thinking you're old in your late twenties!! I got into Paramore's music before i saw the band and could relate to some of the lyrics and found the melodies incredibly addictive. I'm 39 and would now consider Paramore one of my favorite bands.I don't beleive i'm a creep either!! I find that i actually have somewhat the opposite feelings to those expressed of thinking how can these people have written this stuff and have that level of experience being so young! Their material is pretty deep and i find that listening to that kind of material when i'm having trouble or feeling down actually helps lift my outlook. Paramore also help me along in the gym too. It's good solid music and old fogies like me shouldn't have to make an excuse to listen to quality material like Paramore have churned out over the last few years...
Im a 31 year old bloke, have seen Paramore 3 times now after my girlfriend got me into them. I love Paramore more than any band out there at the moment and would be quite hurt to think that Hayley thought I was a perv (etc) just because I pay my hard earnt money for the Paramore albums and for tickets to the gigs....
As much as I love Paramore thats quite an egotistical statement for Hayley to make to presume that all males attending her shows fancy her......
Just saying :)
@SAMMYBAMBOOZLER
wow, i couldnt have said it better myself :)
ROCK ON!!!!! xP
i don't think it really matters if the fans are connected a lot! or not. why should it?
I think that she said this with a different meaning and people have misunderstood what she was actually trying to say. I have listened and read other interviews and she feels that most fans are younger and that they are growing up with them, therefore feeling the same things as them, which to Hayley makes her feel as if she has a connection with her 'younger' fans. She may feel that 'older' fans aren't benefitting from her music as much as she thinks that they have already gone through these experiences.
On the other hand she may feel that some older people, especially men (no offense) come to 'oogle' her and not pay attention to the music as this is not what she wants.
Either way I hope that the article didn't offend you too much as I hope that this was not her intention to dis her older fans, the band as a whole have always stated how they appreciate any fan they have and are continously showing their gratitude and I hope that you can continue viewing them in the same light you always have.
ROCK ON!!!!
i feel that way about the lyrics too, you can take your own interpretation of them
oh and btw i forgot to say in my previous comment that you seem like one of the genuine fans i described
Oh my goodness, there is no comparison between Miley Cyrus and Paramore, in any way. Miley's music is written from the point of view, and directed to young girls.
Perhaps it is merely my interpretation, but i feel the lyrics and music of Paramore is universal. Everyone can can empathise with most Paramore songs, when applied to different times or circumstances in their life, regardless of what they were meant to mean when they were written.
Was at the gig in the Kings Hall in Belfast 22nd June and felt soooo old - I'm 27. I think there were possibly 10 people in the crowd (other than me and my friends) who were over 18. It bugged me at first - I felt like a wee granny lol. Then I remembered I was going to see PARAMORE and suddenly I didn't care lol.
I think Hayleys comments were taken out of context, misinterpreted. I get what she means, I mean if someone in their late twenties loved Miley Cyrus I would be like wtf?! it absolutely cannot be because of her god-awful music heehee.
With Paramore - I love them because the lyrics are not sugar coated nonsense. They are real songs, with real lyrics that speak to me.
@ mattrocks
i agree with you on this one, thats what hayley meant about older fans cause she doesnt know how to take it sometimes, but hayley is a very fair person so im sure she gives them the benefit of the doubt but it would be hard you know?
but i doubt she disregards the genuine older fans who love the whole aspect of paramore, the people they are, the music, the shows, the cds, everything, paramore are always so thankful to all their fans
@mattrocks i used to play warhammer fantasy battle and lotr LOVE IT :)
@thelostankh Maiden are great, i'm not like a huge fan, (some friends are) but i can still appreciate the Maiden :)
To add, there's a little quote made up by Dan Abnett in his Ravenor and Gaunt's Ghosts series (both Warhammer 40K series), which I kinda feel KINDA fits here. It goes like this (don't quote me on this);
"Chaos claims the unwary or the incomplete.
However, the true man might steel his mind
With faith, as he girds his soul
With the armour of contempt."
I'm pretty sure I don't need to say what it is that I'm directing this quote towards.
Well, it's just the way I help keep myself sane in the view of what's been happening, anyways. It might help for some of you.
I reckon I'll re-post what I said earlier; I reckon it'll help. Here it is:
Woah, woah, woah. Wait a sec.
Hayley's not disregarding her older fans. Hardly.
If you read carefully (and I feel bits of what she's feeling at times for her (weird, I know, but I have :l)), she's concerned about why some older fans keep with Paramore.
It's a bit of paranoia (pun not intended), really. There are perverts and wankers out there who follow Paramore just because of her or the guys (Okay, sure, I follow Paramore A BIT because Hayles is an insanely cute little minx with a personality that really does speak out to me, but the majority's because of the music and the atmosphere they create). The Situation Which Must Not Be Named brought that forward to her mind.
You've got YouTube comments from rude wankers who keep saying about what they'd do with her, for one.
Then there's probably the unknown crap on the net that the really depraved probably would've made that involve Hayley (what's she's talking about). Trust me, I've been there (and I'm ashamed of it) - you wouldn't believe the crap the seriously sick, depraved, perverted minds make when it comes to cartoon shows. Hint: Call it a fetish, but what I've seen seems far, far beyond that. I haven't seen anything that involves Hayles, as this was quite a few years ago, but I wouldn't be surprised if some frakking wanker decided to make something.
Then there's The Picture Which Must Not Be Named and the crap that followed.
With all that going on, you'd either have to be completely ignorant or be insanely mentally tough to be able to take all that without being scarred by it at some point.
Remember, guys, Hayles is human, just like us. Paranoia is absolutely natural and, given the circumstances, absolutely understandable.
Let's not let this spiral into a massive rumour, shall we?
Keep the faith, brothers and sisters, and don't despair. Hayles, I now believe, isn't changing like I originally thought.
@lovely thts good to know ..there are quite a few female fans of Maiden...but of course i know they are not every ones cup of tea :).
anyways i guess we have sorted out this discussion..glad to be an old but gold fan of paramore !
@thelostankh - I respect Iron Maiden hugely. Especially their ability to retain credibility despite huge success. They are just not my thing. I think it is because i am guilty of stereotyping too, and think of the shaggy haired, t-shirt wearing, beer drinking, male fans. Terrible prejudice, i know. :(.
@penelope - Things are OK. I often type things, and then after posting, wonder if my words would come across as i intended. :)
I'm now looking forward to being the funkiest, most rocking fans in the front - old, young or in-between. Bring it, kids!!
all them magazines care about is making them selves look good, and they twist the words of the bands, hayley said so her self. so theres no point worrying about it, she respects her fans each the same.
hayley just dont wanna be hurt..true theres alot of older fans who are true and wont do any harm... but we're looking out for hayley..and i know hayley has gut instincts to tell whether to trust this person or not.. remb the interview? abt the old guy coming in for the dinner..she just wasnt secured but that doesnt mean it would apply to all older fans..so cheer up =)...
she doesnt hate older fans yee... shes just aint secured with some..i mean u do have gut instinct to tell which from which you would wanna meet rit.. so ye ^^.. have faith in hayley/paramore.. we love them ^^
Exactly, never trust those kind of magazines. They're just a load of crap. The only magazines I like are Seventeen and Rolling Stone. At least they're descent.
p.s I apologise for coming across as being rude.
@LovelyLabrys - I wasn't calling you thick and if I'm coming across as being rude, it's unintentional . I was reading other people's comments and it's like they've jumped to the conclusion that she hates older fans.
I just think that everyone's taking it out of context and like what @A Misguided Ghost said - it's the kind of magazine that mixes up what they say. I don't believe Hayley has anything against older fans.
Everyone seems to be taking it really personally and Hayley wrote in her "Strange Youth" blog not long ago that she didn't like the magazines portrayal of the band. Like you said - "I am hoping that the article was taken out of context or that Hayley misquoted. I think that this is the case.
@ lovelylabrys - BOO. IRON MAIDEN FTW ! Can you imagine having 250 000 people singing your songs ?
IronMaiden are timeless, hopefully Paramore will evolve and mature as they age. I think the difficult thing for Punk Rock bands is that after they get older they cant really be singing about all these teenage issues, it doesn't seem genuine I suppose. But Paramore have already matured with BNE which is awesome. (Which is why I think they are now garnering an older fan base + I think Parents whose kids are into Paramore get into them cuz they realise their kids are actually listening to some good music iso listening to K$sha)
So hopefully they can keep growing and become a legendary band - not that they are not already :)
there probably some people who think this way.
i do think hayley is a very attractive lady but thats not why i like the band at all! there just a really good band!
girls aloud are all good looking women but i won't be buying their album or seeing them live any time soon!
@Penelope - I am far from thick. The statements in the article i read were far from clear. They were also interpreted in the same way by others in this discussion, prior to Hayleys recent blog post.
@AMG - I did. I posted my query before the Hayleys blog was written, and am no longer offended.
@thelostankh - I'd rather pull all my hair out than go to see Iron Maiden...lol I know you were only giving an example though.
Do you see what Hayley wrote on this website not to long ago? She said that Spin magazine doesn't explain how they really feel or anything. It's the kind of magazine that just wants to mix everything up. So why freak out about being an older fan? Noone's going to judge you.
Oh goodness some people are thick.
Don't misinterpret what she's said. A fan is a fan. Journalists tend twist the interviewees words around to make things controversial. Don't take it to heart. A fan is a fan no matter what age or how many songs they like.
i agree with @Mattrocks. i don't think that hayley disregards the older fans. there are actually creeps out there who follow the band just because they think hayley's sexy. if you're in her place, you'd be freaked out too, because you wouldn't be able to tell if he really likes your music or he's just fancying you.
I am in my 40's and i've been into Paramore from day one i bought the first album about a month after it was released over here and like you i've been a fan for years also my wife is a fan as is my 17 old daughter and my 12 year old son are aswell, but i love there music they are one of the best bands around, i also like 30 seconds to mars/ kings of leon / the lost prophets all bands that appeal to a younger generation but its the music that i'm into.
Unfortanatly there are some creeps who only like them because of Haley and i think this is what she was getting at.
Don't let it upset you Haley and the rest of he band know who there true fans are and i'm proud to be one of them.
dude. i know the guy she was talking about. this was right before the NJ show. he came through the line bragging about meeting her. he was old and creepy....like richard simmons. she wasnt insulting older fans.
their music really is direct towards younger fans (12-25?) but obviously they have fans of all ages. I think she just means to say when she sees these older guys approach her she tries not to be judgemental, but you cant help it at times. think of all the creepy old men that hit on her or approach her.... i bet it gets annoying and you wonder what their intentionss are.
its a bit weird thing for an artist or muscian to say tbh..
take for eg a band like iron maiden..u go to a gig of their and u say at least 3 generations of men in that crowd..sometimes even 4..
grand kids, kids, dad and granpa..tht is a testament to how good a band maiden is to appeal across generations..
if i were in a band..n ppl older than me respected my music i would be proud..not worried..
i havent really read the whole interview or anything..maybe someone can post a link but it looks like her pt is about the fact that her fan base changed once the pic came out ? so it this insecurity all about that pic ? to me it sounds like it..
well im 27 i love paramore..im married and i still think hayley is cute..doesnt mean im a weird creep or something..(or does it LOL)
paramore r one of the few pop bands that actually make good , meaningful music and can actually perform live as close to if not better live..
and if anyone really got turned on by 'that' pic of hayley they are a bit weird cuz it wasnt really the most sexiest of pics out there is it now..not saying she looked bad but common..she looks way prettier and hotter with clothes on than that pic.so yeh..
