'Originality Is Dead'

I saw this statement on a t-shirt by Glamour Kills, and it made me think...

When I think about it, general society has little originality nowadays, everybody does what they think they have to, dresses how they think they should and the listens to music that they think they should to try and become more popular.

It annoys me, because a lot of decent people get caught up in this, and I've lost a couple of my long time friends because I refuse to like the same things as them.

So what do you guys think?

    Is originality dead? x

    *EDIT*

A perfect quote to fit this topic:

'I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I'm not' - Kurt Cobain

    My personal favourite quote ever.

i agree with @C'mon Chickens..
it's sad if people think they have to deny who they really are just to get friends or whatever...you'll find people that are like you if you are just yourself..i think that makes sence doesn't it? so it's sad but we can't do anything to make it better..we can just show our personality...

@Matt

Theres never been a truer statement.

MidnightFelicis97's picture

I'm too original to be considered unoriginal :)

violet cullen's picture

@hidden
Yes :D Mind control, lol.

*that think

YelyahSandy's picture

MarshDawg/Evil Twin- Exactly, I have absolutely no problem with mainstream. It's just people who are SO close minded that anything not mainstream sucks that piss me off

Hiddenstar's picture

hahahahaah mind control:)

YelyahSandy's picture

Haha, those have been my thoughts since I was around eleven.

My social life has never been awesomer, and I've never been happier honestly.

MarshDawg's picture

I agree, I have nothing against any mainstream artists, hell some are extremely talented, annd some of my favourite bands are mainstream nowadays, but, I just don't think it's right that people ONLY like it because they feel they have to, fair enough if they like it, each to their own, but it's the fake people that annoy me.

violet cullen's picture

@MarshDawg
Can I second that? lol.

YelyahSandy's picture

@MarshDawg- Exactly, thats my view on life.

violet cullen's picture

Well, I guess people are just fading into mainstream. I like some mainstream stuff, I dont think its a bad thing.
Its just that most people like whats popular, the mainstream and popular trends are liked by the general public. Its perfectly fine to like that sorta thing, and hell, its normal.
I dont find it any more unoriginal than other things. Its just common intrest, not any sort of mind control :)

MarshDawg's picture

I was like that, no confidence at all when I was about 13/14 but then I just thought to myself, 'fuck it' it doesn't matter what others think, as long as your happy. And I've never looked back on that decision. I've met some of the most awesome people I possibly could from just being my crazy old self :D

Hiddenstar's picture

somewhat, i mean yea most ppls concern nowadass is wht clothes u wear, who u listen to and whatnot. like if ur a rock fan, u can hear all the rock music u like but u still r expected to know allof the mainstrea music thats out. like ever teenager si expeced to listen to rap and pop or something. im nt sayin these genres are bad, just that u dont ssee mny ppl in my school who r obsessed countryfans or anything. most girls r kinda slutty, like the same singers(who have lost originality) , shop at hollister, abercrombie, areopostale, and again, whats the pont of those shirs? theyre so unorginal. its basically just a shirt that says the name of the brand. at least this mks original ppl sem more orginal and happy with themselves :) although w lose many awsom ppl

I wouldn't say dead, but in a coma. :D I agree that a lot of people go with general society, or whatever other people think is 'right' or 'cool', rather than go with what they believe in. Saying that though, that's what society has come to, and no one can help that. I do think more people should find their own originality and express it, but then again, if they don't.. it's them that are missing out, not the ones who are brave enough to show it in the first place. No one can say "you're so shallow" to someone who doesn't express their own individuality though, because they can't help it, not all the time. They haven't found themselves yet, and a lot of the time it's because they have very little confidence, and feel they can't be accepted anywhere but with the people who are 'cool'.

YelyahSandy's picture

Yeah, we're also nerds, which is why we'll never be completely "cool".

Then again, not too concerned about that, my shirts aren't low cut enough anyways ;)

MarshDawg's picture

I agree, my best friend is the craziest and weirdest guy I have ever seen, but that's why I love him to bits. I wasn't saying that nobody is original anymore, but you rarely see it unless you look outside the vast majority.

violet cullen's picture

Its not dead yet, its just dying.

YelyahSandy's picture

*girls, not girl's

YelyahSandy's picture

Not nessisarily, its just buried in some people.

Personally, my group of friends couldn't be more original, we're the freaks people think are cool anyways, despite our craziness.

Then, I know some girls who tail after girl's who's main concern is their bra size ;D.

MarshDawg's picture

@raaaawr the last part of your comment is exactly what I was trying to figure out how to say, just couldn't put it into words haha! I don't hold it against people, I just think they're wasting themselves, and their time on people who won't ever likely be true friends to them. I hate to see it happen to some otherwise awesome people.

marebear392's picture

originality is slowly dying a slow, painful death. nowadays, we all have to be the same, look the same, weigh the same, like the same autotuned music, etc. and, at my school at least, if you try to act out, they look at you like 'wtf's wrong with you?' i think it can be brought back though, i know that. step one? kill ke$ha. lol jk XD

Hannah''s picture

i agree,
people need to start realizing that wearing slutty clothes will not make them popular, and listening to justin bieber will not make them have more friends.
all it'll do is lead them to hide their own personality, and not enjoy life the way they should because they are too caught up in what other people think.
