Performers versus Singers

    Hey guys! I know what you're thinking: Who dug up this dinosaur? Well I saw with all the Justin Beiber debates going on, people had started to really talk about performance skills and singing.

    I just thought I would gather people's opinions on this and share my own.

    I'm not an phenomenal singer or anything, but I've worked with phenomenal and talented directors, managers, voice coaches and producers, and by working with them I've definitely learned how to tell the difference between someone who is singing well and not. A lot of the times, people are extremely talented singers but they aren't breathing correctly or they put too much strain on their voice, things like that. There are times, though when really famous people just don't have too much talent but give you what you want to hear.

    Miley Cyrus is an example of someone who CAN sing, but can't deliver with her voice. If you listen to songs like the climb you can hear the strain she puts on her voice at the high parts. She has the voice, but she needs to take a little while to learn how to fully use it so she can deliver to her audiences. Not to mention the, er, more revealing clothes she's starting to wear clashes with her younger audience, which is about half of her fans. The fact that her new style clashes so outrageously with her original fan base is basically the opposite of good performing skills. She's not delivering to her audience.

    Katy Perry is an example of someone who I don't think is the best singer talent wise, but she delivers amazingly, she gives the public what they want to hear and adds on to it. If you saw her on SNL for example, she didn't really sing all that well, she kind of just shouted California Girlz with different tones in her voice. But the song itself, the clothes she wore, and the way she danced practically made up for that. Same with Justin Beiber. Most people I know can't stand his voice. He doesn't sing live! I may not like the kid, but I gotta give this one to him: He can REALLY dance.

    An example of someone who can sing with full talent and delivery would probably be someone like Lady Gaga. I personally thought that with all the auto-tuning in her songs she would stink live, but look her up on youtube. She's amazingly talented, she can REALLY sing and dance and write. The whole package. P!NK is another fantastic example. Seriously, did you SEE her perform Sober on her funhouse tour? She sang live while doing trapeze flips. It was sick.

    So, which is more important to you? Someone who has the talent but can't deliver it or someone who doesn't have too much talent but gives the audience exactly what they want to hear? Do you agree, disagree, have better examples... post em here!

Britney is actually a fantabulous dancer.

Just saying.

ITS HARD TO SAY
look at britney, i think she sucks at her job but millions of people adore her! her singing voice is average, dancing is sluggish & lets be honest, the girl has probably never sung live in her life yet people still pay hundreds of dollars to watch her stagger around the stage trying to perform.
GAGA is great. personally i dont like her music, i probably like more britney songs, but man does she pull off a show & she can sing.
i think there needs to be a balance of both especially in live shows.

ultimately......its too hard! really cant decide. i like to hear people sing live so maybe id go for talent.

ok.

I agree 100% with the part about lady gaga.She can sing AND deliver but i think the talent part is most important.You can't always have both,sadly. :/

@Sandy Yeah

To me I think both are equally important. I know of amazing singers who don't really perform but have one of the most amazing voices I've ever heard. Then there's many singers who perform their ass off and leave you entertained the whole time they're on stage, but don't have great vocals. To me you I think you need to be able to perform and sing well. If you can perform well but don't really have that great of a voice most of the time people will too entertained and involved to notice. If you can sing extremely well but just stand there and almost never move it will either leave people board or just have them mesmerized by your voice. Personally I think there are times you need to be a good performer and other times you don't really need to.

@Paramorefan23

What?!

Okay, I won't argue with you, I respect your opinion, but REALLY!?

Music Is My Life's picture

Both are just as important!

just saying but another example of people who are extremely talented and deliver extremely well is paramore, they always get the crowd jumping and singin to theere songs, they really engage the audience, and they have INCREDIBLE talent its ridiculous

@Luci @Sandy @Rachel
SHANE DAWSON FTW!!

Anyway, for one thing I think Katy Perry has a voice. I dunno I mean...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2Zd5-sTvV0
That chorus is definitely not something I'd be able to pull off. Not even close.

And for me, putting on a good show and having talent are both really important things. But I'd rather listen to someone who has a voice and knows how to use it. I love seeing a good show but I wouldnt be going to see the show anyway if I hadnt gotten into the music, and for me to get into the music, the singer should have a good voice. Sometimes its fun to watch an interesting performance online or something even if the artist isn't so talented, but I wouldnt actually go buy tickets to a show for that. I'm in it for the music :)

Also... lip syncing bugs me D: I get when artists want to jump around and have fun on stage but if they aren't singing it just doesnt seem... I dunno...real to me I guess. Its like... I've heard the studio version of the song before. At a show I want to hear it sung live.

Ke$ha can sing fine on the record but when she performs she always gets out of breath while dancing and she really doesn't sound that good live. Katty perry is ok as long as she doesn't do a lot of dancing around, when she sings slow songs like Thinking of you or Not like the movies she is great though. Some one who is both a great singer and performer is Carie Underwood. Linkin Park always sounds good live and on the record aswell.

And yeah, the whole purpose of record labels is to make money. hayley wrote a responce on tumblr to this guy saying that Hayley only stayed in Paramore because she was too afraid to make herself sexy and make a scandal. She wrote: "This, my friends, is what’s wrong with the music business. It’s not that I don’t shoot whipped cream out of my bra. It’s the fact that anyone had to do it in the first place."

I think it's so true! But Sex sells.
