Their the reason they are mainstream, the fans. I don't understand it...shouldn't they be happy that band is getting recognition? do rock lovers just want bands to them selves? I personally think it's selfish and stupid. So what if their mainstream!? their still the same band! And why do they call them "Sell outs" how does someone exactly "Sell out"?? The band is still writing their own lyrics, practicing, making music, for the fans.

The real sell outs are the solo artists, come on now! most of them don't even write their own lyrics! And most of them don't even sing properly!  For example, look at Katy Perry (not trying to offend anybody) but her first album, was a worship album, and then she was dropped, and some company completely changed her and turned her mainstream.

Whats your say in all this?

The whole concept of the term "sellout" to me is crap. The band/artist should be able to do whatever makes them happy. As long as they are in it for the love of the music.

Like Metallica during the Load and Reload albums, and maybe even the Black Album. They sounded nothing like their previous albums, and they were considered sellouts and some people still think they are, but that is actually what makes them great. Every album deosn't sound the same. That's why they are still making records and selling out tours, and is one of the biggest bands in the world.

Bands change, people change and their music change. Bands should be able to play whatever makes them happy. If that makes them sellouts so be it.

just cuz they are solo artist dont make them sellouts but Katy Perry def is and also bands that put there music in commercials, and in tv and games exclude rock band guitar hero are sellouts

Katy Perry didn't sell out at all. And how are solo artists ''sell outs''? How do they differ from a band apart from they have all of the credit on albums and bands share the credit? I like most solo artists, Avril Lavigne, for example she writes all her OWN lyrics, is very talented etc. The same goes for Alice Cooper, he is classed as a solo artist, did he sell out? The term ''sell out'' these days is completely different to how it was viewed back then

I think fans call bands or artists sell-outs because when they do something that they might not normally do, like write a kind of song they haven't ever done before, or join onto a superficial franchise for example, the fans feel like the artists are just doing it for fame/money and not because of their love for the music. Selling out is when you change yourself to what people want just because you get more profit from it. So selling out is an actual term.
However some people confuse change for selling out. Sometimes artists feel the need to go in a new direction, and if that direction is more popular than their last then it doesn't mean they sold out, fans should be happy for their new success.
Not all solo artists are sell outs, you shouldn't lump them all together. I wouldn't say Katy Perry is a sell out, she's always been the way she is, she's always been mainstream.

I totally agree!!
Finally! I am so annoyed by all those fans who think that the new "twilight-paramore fans" aren't real fans. I've been a parafan since 2007, but I am so happy for paramores new succes.

Bands/artists arent main stream based on fans.
MCR isnt mainstream, their fan base is very large. .
People/bands are mainstream to me when everybody knows them and their sound is popular.
Katy Perry's always been mainstream. Justin Bieber, Beyonce, Rihanna, Ke$ha, etc, those artists are all popular and have songs played on the radio and you hear about them in the media.
Selling out is stupid, just because you change ever so slightly in your sound doesnt make you main stream.
Selling out doesnt exist. Every band changes throughout the years, so everybody would be a sell out. The term is stupid, it just tries to degrade change. And everybody changes.

At the Katy Perry comment, No. She has not sold out in ANY way. TURNED her mainstream? are you kidding? She was SO mainstream already that that statement is totally retarded.
I kissed a Girl and Hot N Cold are TWO unbelievably popular songs, the rest of the albums is amazing.
Also, i posted this topic about 5 months ago. Just saying.
